Hi, New Zealand. Whats not to like about this phenomenal island nation plopped out in the middle of the Pacific Ocean about 1000 miles from Australia? Heck, its so cool its Lord of the Rings cool! Just the name alone makes you want to find out whats New and how much Zeal can one find in this Land? Ive had more than a few vino lovers claim that New Zealand is fast approaching Lord of the Wines status with the huge global success of Sauvignon Blanc over the past 40 years and the literal explosion of Pinot Noir over the past decade. The wines emanating from New Zealand represent a kind of hybrid with one foot in the New world and one in the Old. The wines tend toward bright vibrancy but still retain structure and balance making for brilliant food pairings. On that note, given the impending annual school of Copper River salmon readying to hit our grills and the alluring summer-like weather becoming the BBQ, some great, affordable, beautiful wines to pair is never a bad idea...
