Hi all: Im writing because I want to be an editor when I grow up. - TopicsExpress

Hi all: Im writing because I want to be an editor when I grow up. At present, I work as a legal researcher and writer at a community legal clinic in Toronto, Canada - and now that Im working with three very talented editors, Ive learned that my own editing skills need some work. Why Im writing: Im trying to decide what plans I should make to get some kind of certification as an editor in the longer term. I plan to start by ordering the Meeting Professional Editorial Standards kit from the Editors Association of Canada and doing some self study (this will help with my professional development in my current field, if nothing else!). My dilemma: I really dont like school. Im pushing 45, work full time and already have degrees in linguistics and in law (I also completed one year of a 2 year journalism program at Ryerson many years ago. For this and other reasons such as expense, I dont really want to pursue a longer term educational program - even with remote learning options. However, if people here think thats the only realistic way to go, Id reconsider. So - school, or no school? Im interested in your practical feedback as working editors - and I do realize that this would be a longer-term goal on my end, so not looking for a quick fix. If youve gotten this far - see, I need an edit! - thanks for bearing with me and I look forward to any wisdom you can share. Regards, Kristina Brousalis
