Hi everyone, I just wanted to post this and get some things off my chest. This is a 2nd story deck were ripping out completely and building new (will post pics when complete). The first picture is just an overall before picture, but in the subsequent pictures they show a perfect example of why we DO NOT set post columns straight in concrete! This is an idiotic practice that needs to be stopped not only by codes needing to reflect this, but also by the contractors out there that insist that this is the proper way. IT IS NOT!! Soil and any type of wood (pressure treated or not) are not meant to mix. This is a SUPPORT structure for crying out loud. Not only is this practice stupid, its dangerous! The footings need to be properly poured as piers with post base brackets set in the concrete, then you wrap the bottom of your columns with ice and water shield and set your posts! Same amount of work to do properly!
