Hi everyone! Id like to address a misconception about Virginia animal releasing agencies that Nathan Winograd and others perpetuate. On his website in a blog dated March 26, 2009, Nathan Winograd makes the following statement about PETAs VDACS animal reporting data: ...the numbers historically come from the State of Virginia’s reporting form which only asks for data for animals taken into custody for the purpose of adoption.” In this statement, hes likely referencing a letter PETA received on May 10, 2007 from VDACS which reads, in part: The State Veterinarians Office of the Virginia Department of Agriculture and Consumer Services requires record keeping and reporting of only those animals that are taken into custody by releasing agencies for the purpose of adoption. The letter goes on to say: We recognize that PETA is making outstanding efforts in the area of animal welfare and would like to extend our appreciation Which is likely why PETAs detractors do not link to the document directly. I will post a link to the document here, however. terrierman/PETA-letter-virginia-records.pdf Because this misconception finds its way into a lot of discussions about PETAs shelter and I know it to be a misconception, I felt it was best to reach out to Virginias State Veterinarian, Dr. Dan Kovich, DVM., for clarification on the matter. This was his reply: The May 10, 2007 letter from this Department to People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals concerns the fact that this organization was at that time reporting animals treated by their veterinary establishment on their annual animal record summary. Rather than stating for the purpose of adoption, it should have read that we require reporting only of animals that are in the legal custody of the shelter for which a disposition can be made. More plainly, it should have stated for the purpose of adoption, transfer, or euthanasia. Please pass this information along to anyone who perpetuates this misconception. Thank you!
