Hi friends, I am working on writing a series of articles that are more personal about my personal journey in parenting a child with a disability and what that has meant to my life. Here is one called Building Our Own Sand Castles. Please pass this along to anyone who you think might enjoy it. Here is an excerpt: What did my life look like when I wasn’t taking care of myself? Well, at various stages my self-neglect was not as obvious. I received my master’s degree when I was 23. I worked in San Francisco during the dot-com boom, and I was used to putting in long hours for a company that gave me a lot of verbal praise when I jumped through hoops and hit impossible deadlines. By the time I had children, I was used to a lot of mental stimulation. After having Jillian, and then Westley two-and-a-half years later, I struggled to find a “home” inside and outside my physical house to continue having the mental stimulation I craved. I loved being a mother, but I found it was often challenging to go for a few days without having the types and intensity of conversations I had had for the previous years. I was also used to being reinforced for my role in life in a very tangible way. When you grow up in the workforce, hard work is rewarded by raises and bonuses. When you take that same work ethic and shift it over to parenting, the internal reinforcement system of simply knowing you are doing the right thing can be hard to learn.
