Hi guys, I have an important question to ask you about the journal - TopicsExpress

Hi guys, I have an important question to ask you about the journal assignments. The syllabus states, The marker (and that would be me, R. Glasberg) will normally look at one entry of his own choosing and will also read any entry that the student wishes to have examined. I was wondering what point there is to write 16-20 full-page single-spaced journal entries over the course of the class when only four or five of those will actually be marked. It almost seems like we are in a 25k marathon and even though we know our final standing at the 5 km mark, we have to run an extra twenty kilometers just to demonstrate we can run that far even though we arent judged on it. If Glasberg assigned us this many pages to write, it would have been fair if he marked every single one but this is not the case. Glasberg said he wants to challenge us intellectually, but to me at least this is a challenge encouraging quantity rather than quality. a set of entries hits almost 2500 words which is longer than any final essay that Ive at least written, AND THEN we have to do THREE MORE of these. By writing just one or two entries per set we can devote the time and attention to making those entries unique and original rather than wasting time writing entries that only exist for the comprehensiveness mark. Finally, these assignments unfairly reward students that have alot of time. Some students who have less classes and no job can easily take the time to make each journal entry special but there are some of us who will suffer not because of lack of commitment, dedication or ability, but because of the need to pay the bills, play in varsity sports, or the work of other demanding classes. But hey, maybe im stuck in a fantasy like Don Quixote and just a lazy ass, i dont know. Glasberg wanted us to act as a tribe and I just wanted to know if im the only crazy person who thinks this A) is too much work and B) doesnt line up with the nature of the class to encourage original thought. Sorry if im stirring up disorder as oppossed to order as sweet Glazzy would say but I thought I would be Frank even though my name is Dan.
