Hi my name is Jackie and just wanted to share my story as I am very passionate and feel that it is extremely important that we raise awareness to Ovarian Cancer. It is no longer the silent killer if more awareness is made available to all women. It was four years on 9th April 2009 that I lost my dear sister-law Jackie and It was 4 years on 9th May 2009 that I also lost my lifelong friend Christine to Ovarian Cancer. Both of these women had the classic signs but were not aware of the symptoms to Ovarian Cancer. Jackie my sister-law had a history of breast cancer but again she was unaware that the 2 could be connected. She took great care in the examination of her breasts and had regular breast screening; she also educated her family in the importance of breast screening. Christine my friend was a carer for many family and friends who suffered cancer and only became aware of the symptoms of Ovarian Cancer through Jackie my sister in-law they were also very good friends. However by the time Christine was diagnosed she was far to advance and survived less than 6 six months. After Jackie was diagnosed she had course of treatments that allowed her to live a further 2 years. It has been an extremely difficult time for both families and friends of theses 2 very important beautiful women. My experience with this has made more determined to do all I can to make sure I raise awareness of the symptoms to the women in my community. I have been invite to a few women’s groups and put on events in my daughters beauty salon handing out Ovarian Cancer Action leaflets explaining the symptoms. We also are in process of organising an event during the summer date TBA were will are trying to encourage the ladies and gentleman of our community to purchase a pair of Ovarian Cancer Action knickers from M&S and join us getting a photo taken that we hope will go in the local paper the knickers we have purchased are also going off to China in August with Jackie’s daughter Natalie and her friend Sophie they will be taking photos of their travels wearing the knickers. I feel that if the Jackie and Christine had information that Ovarian Cancer Action are trying to spread we could have had a very different outcome. Anyone intrested in finding out more information go to ovarian.org.uk/
