Hi there, clients and friends! You may recall a sensational news story out of Atlanta in November 2013 claiming that Trifexis (a widely used heartworm, flea & intestinal parasite preventive) killed dogs. At that time, we responded to the situation with a Facebook post that stated we knew of no scientific proof that there was a correlation between the two. In fact, an independent pathologist found that the cause of the death in the dogs from the news report was NOT linked to Trifexis. The pathology report was made available to veterinarians and Dr. Chosa was able to read the report. After researching all available information, we felt comfortable continuing to recommend this medication because it has been SO effective as a parasite preventive. As with all medications, there are inherent risks and in our experience, Trifexis does cause some dogs to vomit. We have never seen a serious illness or death in this practice linked to Trifexis. We offer several alternative products for any clients who do not want to give this product to their dogs for any reason. A follow up story was broadcast by the same news station on July 30th and has caused a second wave of concerned pet owners, but there is no new information. Our stance is the same: We have found Trifexis to be a very effective medication for killing fleas and preventing heartworm disease. We have no scientific evidence that it has killed any dogs & in fact, we have used it very successfully in hundreds of patients. Many of our own dogs, including Dr. Chosa and Dr. Thomas dogs, take Trifexis monthly. Rather than write a new article, we posted this one written by another veterinarian, because it sums up the perspective of our staff so well. As always, if you have ANY questions or concerns, well be happy to help however we can! Dont hesitate to contact us.
