Hichilema Booed, Chased Away in Nchelenge After successful campaign flops in Mansa and Isoka, opposition United Party for National Development (UPND) leader Hakainde Hichilema on Friday morning suffered yet another public humiliation when residents of Nchelenge, Luapula in Chief Kambwali’s are booed and chased him away during his Zambia United trail. The opposition leader who is enjoying pockets of popularity growth in Lusaka alone and maintains his Southern Province stronghold is so much loathed among the Bemba speaking people in the Northern parts of the country. Luapula, Copperbelt, Northern, Muchinga and Central province (except some parts of Chisamba and Chibombo) are not embracing Hichilema because of the Tonga dominance in the party. Eastern province has equally kept the opposition leader at arms length. Hichilema is the only politician to have gone round the country so far but his popularity does not match either that of Edgar Lungu (PF) or Rupiah Banda (MMD) in most of the areas he has been today. After paying a courtesy call on Chief Kambwali this morning, Hichilema was met by boos and was chased with chants of other candidates’ names. Hakainde is in Luapula and his scheduled rally has been stopped by heavy rains and poor attendance. He restored to classroom meetings where a few villagers from some friendly ally were rounded up to give him some semblance of a meeting. He has been taken to Luapula by Mutale Nalumango and other officials. Katele Kalumba held meeting with UPND Vice President Canisious Banda last week at Pamodzi terraces and convinced UPND that the party could work with two named chiefs Last week some chiefs, after meeting PF President Edgar Lungu in Mansa expressed concerns about the political activities of former Finance Minister, Katele Kalumba in the province.
