High ISO Sample #1 - Canon 7D Mark II It is rather dark and gloomy today and it is my first day with the 7D Mk II. I thought I would hop outside and give my new Red Rider BB Gun a shot. There are two images here. The first is the unedited version from the camera. Since Adobe has not created a RAW converter, I did have to download Digital Photo Professional 4 from the Canon USA website to read the RAW file. I converted the CR2 file to an 8bit TIFF. This made it workable in Elements 11 which I use on a regular basis. I have not tried the TIFF in Lightroom yet. The second image is edited and processed in Photoshop Elements 11 with noise reduction from Topaz Denioise and detail enhancements made with Topaz Detail 3. I also made some of my usual adjustments in Elements. The EXIF Data is as follows: Canon 7D Mk II EF 600mm f/4 L IS USM ISO 3200 f/4 1/400th This nuthatch was within 25 feet. I prefer to shoot at f/8 since I am shooting at 600mm and with subjects that close the DOF is really short. I will do some more testing. This was just one of my first tests with a high ISO. The unedited image is not bad at all. People will squawk but hey, I am lucky if I ever shot higher than ISO 640 with my 7D. Even at that, ISO 640 on the 7D would look much worse than this image taken at ISO 3200. A RAW image is a raw image. In this case the converted TIFF image needed some work. With a little help from Elements and Topaz, we have a workable image. When it is all said and done I would like my images to be a little nicer than this first test. Still, if this were one of those once in a lifetime type shots...plenty keep-able. Lets not start anything about processing and software. If you have not come to terms with digital images are processed from software from the start, and post processing is needed...then you will likely not obtain the end results you desire. My first impressions regarding high ISO. The 7D Mk II leaves the 7D in the dust! Oh...and the AF...very speeeedy!!! This image was shot in One Shot but the AF from one spot to another, especially amongst tree branches in low light...AMAZING!! I will be sharing more thoughts along the way. I have only owned the 7D Mk II for about 7 hours now, and I spent about 2 hours going through the manual and settings. More to come... Happy Clickin!!!
