Highway 881 Re-opened The Morris Creek Bridge on Highway 881, previously impassible due to high water levels, has been re-opened for lighter vehicles. Emergency crews will be on scene throughout the night to monitor the situation and assist with traffic control. The RCMP is reminding motorists to exercise caution when traveling in the area. Further updates on when the bridge will be re-opened to all traffic will be provided once it becomes available. Background (Released 2013-06-10) Highway 63 has been re-opened in both directions and traffic has resumed. Water and debris on the roadway, resulting from earlier flooding, have been cleared, but motorists are still reminded to proceed with caution. Secondary Highway 881 continues to remain closed at this time. Background (Released 2013-06-10) At the request of numerous media outlets photos of the bridge affected by high water levels on Secondary Highway 881 are attached. This highway continues to be closed to traffic. Travel on Highway 63 has resumed with one lane open, alternating between north and south bound traffic. Road conditions continue to be unfavourable in many areas and travel is slow going. The Wood Buffalo RCMP continues to discourage travel at this time. Background (Released 2013-06-10) Highway 63 continues to remain partially impassible and now RCMP are advising that Secondary Highway 881 is also closed due to flooding. Police have received information that a bridge north of Anzac is reportedly being washed out making it unsafe for vehicles to travel over. Travel is not recommended in the area and motorists are advised to proceed with caution if travel is absolutely necessary. Background (Released 2013-06-09) On June 9, 2013, shortly before 9:30 pm, Wood Buffalo RCMP were informed by Carillion, in conjunction with Alberta Transportation, that Highway 63 was being shut down approximately 32 kilometres south of Fort McMurray due to flooding. Traffic is being rerouted onto Highway 881, as the roadway remains open at this time. Large transport trucks that are currently on the roadway will still be allowed through on Highway 63, however police are strongly recommending that all motorists make alternate arrangements. Motorists are reminded to drive to the road conditions. Given the large amount of precipitation that has fallen, and continues to come down within the area, visibility is reduced and the likeliness of slippery roads is greater. At this time, there is no estimate of how long the highway will remain impassible, and updates will be provided as new information comes to light.
