Historically, Winn Parish has been an oddball within Louisiana. It was established as a parish in 1852, a later date in comparison to the rest of the state, due to slow settlements. Winn was considered less desirable land. It was the only parish to vote against secession in 1860--representative to the secession convention David Pierson was not the only no vote, though. Winn Parish was also a hotbed of populism. In 1912 the parish supported Socialist candidate Eugene V. Debs for president and elected Socialists to the school board, police jury, all of Winnfields city offices, and state senate. So it should come as no surprise that the parish had a Socialist newspaper, The Comrade. Featured is the issue from October 21, 1910. Local stories of interest are the Dodson Fair and a Socialist meeting at Cypress Creek.
