History Lesson of the Day (#1): On this date in 1916, Adeline and August Van Burenfinished the first successful transcontinental motorcycle tour to be attempted by two women. They started in New York City on July 5, 1916, ending in San Diego, CA. The sisters were the first women to ride 5,500 miles over hazardous roads, in 60 days, to cross the continental United States, each on their own solo motorcycle. Adeline and August descended from Martin Van Buren, the eighth President of the United States, and were society girls.
