History geek moment.. I learnt something today. Apparently, after the USAAF bombed the German ball bearing factories at Schweinfurt (one of the costliest raids of the European daylight campaign, with losses nearing 50%), despite being neutral, Swedish ball bearing manufacturer SKF made up up the Nazis 30% reduction in capacity by diverting production from their US plant to Germany via South America. This was at the cost of supplying US companies, some of which almost failed as a result. If that doesnt illustrate the ultimate futility of war then I dont know what does. If it wasnt so tragic it would be funny.
