Hmmm There are all these experts and fanatics going on and on about what to eat when and what not to eat and why... Its sort of obvious that if you dont eat homegrown, your taking a risk. And if you load up on junkfood instead of real food, your taking a risk. And if you eat anything from a commercial mass-production chemical-using farm, your taking a risk. I have my own criteria: 1. Grow whatever I can at home in a non-chemically treated way. Or buy from a traditional farmer. When buying from a store, look for foods that natural, not perfected. Beware of things with enhanced color, smell like chemicals, or have a flawless appearance. 2. If I feel healthy and energetic after eating it, I put it on the menu. 3. If I feel ill lethargic or moody after eating it, I take it off the menu. It really is that simple. And to get all the vitamins and minerals, keep this in mind: 1. foods are the color of their richest element... so get one fruit/vegie of each color into every meal. 2. Eat a variety of nuts for the oils (including olive). 3. Everything in meat can be gotten from a fruit/vegetable/nut. But if you must have meat, opt for organic jello or bone marrow. 4. Get a variety of seaweeds 5. Sugar is not a food, its an addictive drug, avoid it as much as possible. Use un-processed salts, though in moderation. Grow fresh seasonings in a countertop greenhouse. 6. Juicing/blending saves time and makes raw foods more digestible. Preferable for dense foods like carrots kale and nuts. 7. Boiling leaches out vitamins, so only boil vegies when including the water in your meal. Steam and stirfry are much better to lightly soften and heat without killing the food. 8. If you want trustable information about food: Look for nutrition articles from nutritionalists who eat their words. Avoid recommendations from scientists with vested financial interests in their funders. 9. My own tip: take a look at your ancestry. Whatever your great great great grandparents grew up on, you probably have healthy cravings for. Get back to your roots and try a rutabega, beat, or sweet potatoe. Or try some recipies that include flora. In the end, diets are not for loosing weight. Diets are to make you healthy. Obesity is a side effect of consuming things that cannot be absorbed by your bodys cells. Part of weight-gain is a side-effect of a starving body going into survival mode. Part of chronic and fatal illness is because our cells are weak from not being fed the nutrients they need to fight off desease. So, set aside the fast food and junk food and all things that dont deserve to be called food, shop at smaller stores that serve farmer surplus, start a little greenhouse in the livingroom window, and naturalize your diet to save your life.
