Hobby drones are set to be the hot gift for the 2014 holiday season, but before we consider the potentially serious implications of this fact, lets pause to enjoy Weird Al Yankovic serenading us about this fact on behalf of Radio Shack. I mean, really, whats not to like? From the well-meaning but slightly misinformed gift giver looking for “heliquads” to Weird Al himself using a falconry glove to recover the Parrot AR Drone – its a thing of beauty. Something which bears considering is that the more of these systems there are out “in the wild” the more of them will be be used by people without due regard for safety. I did some “back of the envelope” calculations once, and determined that somewhere in excess of 99.999999 percent of new drone users are not making national headlines with their poor judgment. However, it only takes one to collide with a manned aircraft or hurt somebody on the ground, and weve all got an issue. So, if youre getting a heliquad for a friend or loved-one this holiday season, or someone you know receives one, spend a few minutes and teach them about safe and respectful flying.
