Holding a door open for someone is always a nice gesture and can - TopicsExpress

Holding a door open for someone is always a nice gesture and can be the start you were looking for to begin your day, but be aware. Many door holds go above and beyond and can become annoying in a hurry. To give you an example let me explain what happened to me today. I got out of my car to get gas and took 2 steps in the direction of the store door. I would assume that I was at least 70 feet from the entrance. I noticed an older gentleman was holding the door for me, this is an unacceptable door hold. Im way too far from the door. I call this the hurry up Im waiting door hold. This is uncomfortable for me and the holder because after acknowledging the door holder, it is up to me to get to the door as quick as possible. My light walk turns into a brisk jog, and for what? So I dont have to open a door? Nothing like running in a shirt and tie at 7:45 in the morning, shirt coming un-tucked, just so I dont keep the person holding the door open for me waiting. I mean, if I dont get to the door as quick as possible I feel as though Im wasting their time. Then what do I do? Apologize for not running? Im sorry I didnt run to the door, my knee has been killing me lately. What is the person holding the door thinking about me? Oh come on, would this kid hurry up already. Even worse, now Im responsible for the next door hold. I survey my surrounds, looking over both shoulders to see if the next hold will be done by me. The worst door hold is the multiple people door hold. I refer to this as the The Master of Ceremonies hold. This ones brutal. These holds can take forever. They can be as short as a few seconds or as long as a minute or two. However, these holds can have their benefits. The sense of appreciation you receive after a nice long hold can be very gratifying. Everyone thanks you and you eat it up, that is until one person doesnt acknowledge you and guess what? YOU GET MAD!! Like what a jerk, he didnt even thank me for holding this door open for him. If anyone works in an office building Im sure you are well aware of the next hold referred to as the I dont know who you are hold. This move doesnt really constitute as a hold but Ill share anyway. This happens when you have an I.D card to enter your work building. I guess this can also occur at an apartment complex. You swipe your card and open the door but pay no attention to who or what is behind you. You do this because according to work policy, you are to open the door for no one. The last thing you need is to let someone into the building who is not supposed to be in the building. Normally there is no problem but sometimes when someone forgot their badge or is carrying a birthday cake with balloons you have to make a decision. I dont really want to get too in depth because again, I dont believe this is a hold The last and my favorite door hold is the Heavy push or what I refer to as the Bank vault push. These holds are a little uncommon but absolutely suck having to perform. The move normally starts when you see someone walking in while you are walking out. Typically Ive noticed that the only 2 people who require this hold is someone in a wheelchair or a delivery man with a dolly. The big problem with this hold is that instead of holding the door you are actually pushing the door open. This move is extremely complex. You are stretched out with your feet pointing in the opposite direction just trying to hold or push the door open. It doesnt take long for your right arm to start to burn. The door becomes heavy because you push while trying to stay to the right to give the person room to enter. . This hold doesnt get a lot of recognition but trust me, if you can pull this one off, people notice. Thats all I got
