Holocaust testimony of survivors from the city of Cluj, Romania. Once capital of Transylvania and with a German-speaking Jewish population, the city had a Jewish population of 13,500 people as of 1930. After the occupation of Hungary in March 1944 the persecution of the Jews began. A ghetto in a former brickyard was created in May. At its peak it contained approximately 18,000 Jews, including those brought in from Szamosújvár and from the neighboring communities in Kolozs County. The Jews were deported to Auschwitz-Birkenau in six transports between May 25 and June 9, where the majority were murdered in the gas chambers.
