Home Safety Tips It’s that time of year again! It’s time to climb in the attic, basement or in the back of the closet to pull out your rustic winter gear and prepare for those rigid windy city temperatures. It’s also time to turn the heat on or up, and keep those inside temperatures nice and toasty. The National Fire Protection Association completed a study that estimated U.S Fire Departments responded to an average of 366,000 home structure fires per year between 2007-2011. These fires caused an estimated average of 2,570 civilian deaths, 13,120 civilian injuries, and $7.2 billion in direct property damage per year. The NFPA estimated that cooking equipment is the leading cause of home structure fires and non-fatal home fire injuries. Yet, smoking materials is still the leading cause of home fire deaths. Be Smart and Be Safe! Below, I’ve compiled a few home safety tips that I put into practice for my own home and family that you may want to consider when reviewing your own home safety plan: Check smoke & carbon monoxide alarms monthly and quarterly. Put a reminder in your phone to do this! Create a safety plan and develop evacuation drills! Ensure adequate lighting inside and outside of your home Clean dryer vents annually Turn-off space heaters before going to bed. Ensure they’re not positioned near flammable items Double check oven and stove-top before going to bed Don’t run extension cords long distances To learn more home safety tips, visit nfpa.org.
