Home about 0100 from our annual outing to Mark Daviess lovely Bradfield Traditional Music Weekend, on the picturesque outskirts of Steves hometown of Sheffield. Were proud to have been invited guests and to have attended every one of these weekends since their inception nine or ten years ago. The weekend was slightly complicated by a B3 gig in Penistone (about 10 miles from Bradfield) on Saturday night. This seemed unpromising, but actually turned out to be rather pleasant. The venue was a large mock-medieval barn across the car park from Tescos, and which normally serves as a home for Penistones indoor market. Fortunately, wed taken the extra Bose speaker cabinets so managed to get a good sound despite the size of the place. Caller Terry Evans, kept the dancers working, and it got much easier to fill the floor after the food break. The band (just Steve, Chris P and Alice) played well, and the organisers said that the event had exceeded their expectations. Nice feedback. But all this made it necessary for Steve to conserve energy on Saturday (four hours of squeezing a melodeon isnt trivial), so we didnt do much instrumental sessioning at Bradfield. However, we got a fair few songs in on Friday night, Sunday afternoon and Sunday evening, with even Steve being persuaded to deploy his vocal cords. Our rewritten version of Roll Alabama, Roll got the occupants of the Royal hotel raising the roof of Sunday night, and we ended the evening with When you and I were young, Maggie. Its always great to renew acquaintances at these events, but its a special pleasure to see and hear some of our readers in the flesh, including Gav Atkin (sadly, Julie was unwell), Tracey Boyle and Edith, Colin Batho, Liz Davenport and Chris Bartram. Hope that Paul Davenports concertina gets sorted. And of course, our thanks to Mark and Joan for organising the event.
