Home from hospital after two weeks in with broken leg. Went to - TopicsExpress

Home from hospital after two weeks in with broken leg. Went to pick up glasses for Josie that were ready in Morinville, about 20 kilometres north and slipped on ice in the parking lot as soon as I got out of the car and broke it in two places. Was stuffed with morphine until I was able to have surgery, a metal rod down my leg. Its my second day home. Cannot say enough about nurses and staff in Misericordia. All I heard about that place was its constant flooding problems but the staff are terrific. When I passed physio enough to climb and descend steps they said I was good to go. They were so incredible to me on my getting out. Cannot praise the nurses and doctors and physio staff at the Misericordia Hospital high enough. Now the problems. Telephones are down as I didnt pay bill as I was in hospital. No way for Home Care to contact us. No way for family to contact us except through FB. I need to get out early to make that payment so we have contact with outside world. We could die in our home and no one would ever know. Im supposed to be Josies caregiver, with her three strokes. I fell twice from the taxi to the door. Friends brought the car home and I need to get it fixed (wobble I was warned might happen when the snow tires were put on, I need lug nuts tightened after 500 k) then pay bills and make sure we have outside world contact. It will be a scary day. Good Josie is ok. We had one scare when I was in hospital but more on that later. For now, I have to practice getting around. :) Be careful everyone on that ice. Slipping on ice and breaking a bone is so much more common than I ever thought, and much more dangerous. One poor fellow who broke his ankle three years ago got a bone infection and eventually lost his leg just above the knee. Be careful on that ice. My God. I went from healthy care giver to an unemployed poor sap wobbling on crutches in an eye blink. Never thought I would ever break a bone in my life. An Ice-Road trucker was in after just stepping off his truck. There goes his $12,000 per month winter pay on the far northern ice roads. He was in bed next to me and was in great spirits. You have to laugh in the hospital. You have to help out. You have to make it easier for the nurses so they have strength for the next person. Another fellow in a nearby bed, a little older, slipped on ice like me and broke his hip. It was an eye-opening experience all around. And were not old for Gods sake. Im getting better day by day. But today I have to get around. Cheers.
