Homi what were you smoking when you came up with the deliciously, delightful Finding Fanny! Its a leisurely paced story with unforgettable, idiosyncratic characters displaying human nature in its most engaging form, flawed and fragmented. An elderly postman Ferdie living a melancholic, lonely life under the assumption that his singular love rejected him, discovers the marriage proposal he wrote her 46 years ago was never delivered. A motley crew of villagers ensue a road trip to a neighboring town to help him find fanny to set the record straight. Deepika plays the divine Angie, a bored, sweet-intentioned, emotionally manipulative young widow and Ferdies best friend is the catalyst for the road trip. Arjun Kapoor as the young chap Savio, disillusioned, harmlessly angry, desperately in love with Angie displays impressive acting chops as the least experienced of the cast. Veteran Pankaj Kapur dons the persona of an old, eccentric artist with a large lady complex and is utterly, convincingly creepy. Dimple Kapadia once upon a time an A list heroine, plays Rosie, the large lady muse with the mojo of a reigning beauty queen, nothing to prove to no one, she is guts and glory. I would do dishonor to my fangirlism, if I didnt show full-on bias for Naseeruddin Shahs Ferdie, playing it partly like Nerudas postman, its impossible not to be moved by his heartfelt innocence and uncorrupted portrayal of a simple man who put romantic love on a pedestal higher than his life. Its a lovely, non-mainstream Bollywood movie that made a night out at the movies, unfettered fun. Lastly dont expect any typical naach-gaane (song and dance), the old world, charming soundtrack is just a sweet accompaniment into the small lives of small towns. If any of the above seems like an attractive escape, take a trip to your local theater and yes you can take your brain along with you, unlike other Hindi movies its not in danger of being abused. youtu.be/5O86FUOrlkY
