Hope all in the UK had a nice bank holiday weekend...despite the typical pouring rain!! At least one of the band was out and playing with his bone in the rain....Mikey playing at a packed Notting Hill carnival with Pheonix City Allstars and Freddie Notes.....trust it was a damn fine gig sir? Just to ease us out of the weekend, and back to work, I have to share this beautiful beast with one and all Intensified friends...havent heard this in a while, and a friend posted it up earlier...its just so evocative of the rocksteady era in Jamaica, those tunes between 66 and mid 68, after the fiery ska, and before the frantic keyboard heavy early reggae...the sweet, smooth and heavy sound that is often cited as the golden era.....uncluttered, soulful..... Noel Scully Simms (aka Skully, Skitter) was one of the first ja hit vocalists starting his career in the 50s as part of the duo Simms and Robinson, aka Bunny and Skully....after many RnB and doo wop style hits Noel recorded some solo ska sides for Prince Buster, and then Coxsone Dodd....also hitting as a duet with the mighty Alton Ellis.....in the 70s his career took him further as a percussionist, playing with all the backing bands of note, touring, and later being a part of the Jamaica Allstars band...... Bluecat singles are for the most part rare felines....I remember in the early days of collecting vintage reggae 45s people talking of them in hushed tones....almost as if they didnt exist....and certainly the same 5 or 6 turn up regularly..whereas the other 70 are just there to tease us!! From late rocksteady into early reggae, its a peach of a label and still very very sought after..... So, enjoy....Mr Scully in achingly heartfelt form.....a simple, sad message.....a beautiful piece of vinyl all round....
