Hope everyone doesnt mind, but in case you are not on the Putney NSW Memories site, this is what I did for my 65th Birthday weekend last Friday and Saturday. What a trip down memory lane this past weekend. Came down on Friday the 30th for my 65th birthday with hubby Peter. Son had booked us into the Metro on Victoria Road, crn. Bowden St. Dropped the bags (or should I say bag, travel light these days) off and headed straight to the Putney Tennyson Bowling Club to meet up with wonderful friend Gary Molan. Down Bowden St, left into Constitution Road, left into Belmore, then right into Morrison Road. turned left at the old Aspley Corner shop and went down Regent Street to Waterview Street. Not much room to pass with cars parked on side of road. I showed my manners and let the rat-race people pass. Along Waterview St, up Douglas St past all those houses Allen Bowley just posted about. Left into Phillip Road, then onto Princes Street. Up the big dipper and right into Morrison Road again. WHAT A SHOCK. Weemala is not the old hospital anymore. Cyclone wire fencing all around. Attended many a fete in those old grounds. Very sad. Would love to buy a unit there. Out of my price bracket I think. Down Morrison Road, past Bolton, then Payten, then Douglas Streets. Called into the IGA to buy toothbrushes and toothpaste, which I had left behind in Taree. Keeping the local economy going. Out the back into Charles Street, past Mr. Goldsmiths, the old Walmens, Harrys. Had to stop at traffice lights. Looked over to see the old Elliotts Butcher Shop as a Liquorland. Would have preferred meat in those days to grog. Not so much after I left. haha. Saw your old house next door Linda Moore. Looks still original. Raced down Charles Street, past the old bust stop on Crn of Phillip Road. Love a sixpence for every bus caught at that corner. Down past the Dodds, Booths, Kirbys, McKays houses (hard to recognise where everyone lived), to the Crabb house. Turned left into Waterview/Delange and followed around till Chadwick St. Past the old Derryman, Knight, (as in Jimmy) right down to the bottom for Moody, Turner and Knight families. Lost count of others who lived there. I remember Linda Moore was a resident. Came back to corner for Tranters. (Mrs. Tranter worked at Putney, if my memory serves me correct). Back into Delange Road, past the Fenner house, Lorraine I think. Turn right into Pellisier Road. So many names popped into my head. Iggy, Baden, Bessie Coates to name a few. turned around and came back to Stanley Street. Past the old Allen Bowley and Judy Spooner houses. Running late, must get to the Bowlo to meet Gary Molan. Gary pulled up two minutes after us. Went inside, had a wonderful time remembering old times and days. Met Warren who worked with hubby, and friend Morry. Son David, called in for a few beers and dinner. Wonderful evening. Could not have spent a better 65th Birthday. It was great. Day 2. Lunch at Gladesville Bowling and Sports Club with sons and their families, drive to park (Cleves) behind my old house. Kids played in park and I told family about my days growing up there. Off up Douglas Street, up Morrison Road, then down Princes Street. Every child should experience going down Princes Street. Back along Waterview St, past Halvorsens and headed for the PUNT. Just missed one but soaked up the atmosphere. Across the punt, to the old Palace of Germs Hotel. Very yuppy nowadays. Couple of beers and then out west to stay at eldest sons place for the night. Grandchildren and families enjoyed my nostalgia trip very much. Make sure you all take a trip with your families down this road. I have written a lot, but I think you all would appreciate how much I enjoyed calling back into Putney and its surrounds after so many years. Like · I didnt forget Gladesville either. Left Motel to travel along Morrison Road again. Did a detour down Bayview St, into Tennyson Road. No more Tennyson Textiles. Passed the old Douglas House, where Tony and his parents Jeff and Enid lived. (Confused last time I wrote about them Called them Jeffreys). Around the bend into Champion Road, couldnt remember where Lyn lived. House on left heading towards Morrison Road. Turned right and straight up to Meriton Street. Remembered Nell Clark who lived in flats opposite clock (left hand side) at top of Meriton St. Thought of the old Masonic Hall down Wharf St or Rd. Use to go to Manchester Unity Lodge there. Turned right onto Victoria Road to Canada Bay to see a granddaughter play netball (u/8s). Approached start of Gladesville Hospital and thought of a woman I worked with late 1960s, whos husband worked there. Elaine Antees or Ansteed. Secretary at Dowsett Engineering at Hunters Hill. Names and places kept popping into my head. Things I hadnt thought of for decades came flooding back as I passed my old school Riverside. Names, faces appeared just like it was yesterday. Up and over the Gladesville Bridge, which was completed the same year I left school, 1964. We both have a common bond. Wonderful time, will not leave it for another 30 years before calling back again. We all need to walk or drive down our Memory Lanes, before its too late and we cant revisit these wonderful places from our past.
