Hopefully some of the elders quorum are reading this; this will be the first spiritual thought post, but Ill be posting one every day from here on out. Id also love to have other people post spiritual thoughts or announcements, so please, if anyone has any thoughts on the message posted that day or any other particular spiritual thought they feel prompted to share, please do. Hopefully this can be a place we can discuss the gospel and grow together spiritually as a quorum. The thought for today comes from the sunday school study guide. This coming weeks lesson revolves around the evolving ministry of John the Baptist and Christ. Often when (if) Ive read the study guide in preparation for the sunday school lesson I just skim through the bullet points and somewhat think about the questions asked there. Thanks to my thoughtful wife, shes insisted integrating the study guide into one or two of the days of our companionship study throughout the week, so weve actually taken the time to study it in a bit more detail. As we did so today, I noticed that a set of scriptures they had listed werent just a bunch of scriptures on the subject of Johns teachings, but instead were a scripture chain outlining the steps of repentance. (see 2 corinth 7:9-10; Luke 19:8; Mosiah 7:33; D&C 1:31-32; 58:42-43 https://lds.org/manual/new-testament-class-member-study-guide/lesson-4-prepare-ye-the-way-of-the-lord?lang=eng) A missionary I served with had a favorite doctrine he used to mention at almost any opportunity: the critical importance of daily, frequent repentance. We need consistent repentance for the small things in our lives, not just the big things. As we continually seek to improve even the small things, Heavenly Father will highlight the next steps for us to take in our lives. I want to testify of the power of repentance and of the importance of following each and every step of repentance. Frequently we simply feel bad for our sins and ask forgiveness from the Lord in our attempts to repent, but that is only part of the steps of repentance. I know that if we truly make a conscious effort to repent in our lives (no matter how large or small those things are), it will make drastic differences in our very outlook and attitude about life. It might not seem to make a huge difference in what happens to us, but will instead change how we approach and handle those same challenges.
