Horror vacui, the statement is attributed to Aristotle. Nature abhors a vacuum. Or to say it another way, power tends to fill a void. That is how WWII started. For those of us who have read about the history of WWII what is happening now in Crimea is eerie and familiar. We may be seeing history repeat itself. For those of you who are not history buffs here is the bullet point comparison version. The end of WWI (Cold War) changed the face of the world powers. The economy of the defeated old world power Germany (Russia) was chaotic after losing the war. An embittered soldier, Hitler (Putin) rose to power after about 20 years promising to rebuild the pride, might and economy of Germany (Russia). The Allied powers tired of war and recovering from a severe depression (recession) had no will to engage the rising threat. Hitler (Putin) testing the will of the Allies marched into the Rhineland (Georgia) in 1936 (2008). The Allies did nothing but complain. Emboldened, Hitler (Putin) marched into the German (Russian) speaking parts of Czechoslovakia (Ukraine) to protect ethnic Germans (Russians) in 1938 (2014). The Allies complained and imposed sanctions. US intelligence released a report today that Russia is preparing to invade the rest of the Ukraine (a proposed NATO ally). In 1939, Germany invaded and took the rest of Czechoslovakia. 1939 was the year WWII started. Well, I hope 1940s fedoras for men and hats for women come back in style as well. I love wearing my hats. I just hope that the style in hats doesnt come back with the death of the 2.5% of the worlds population killed in WWII.
