Hosts Indonesia, Thailand set up final showdowns in Asean University Games Volleyball Championship Palembang, Indonesia, December 13, 2014 - Thailand and hosts Indonesia set up final showdowns in both men’s and women’s events in the 17th Asean University Games Volleyball Championship at the Palembang Sports and Convention Center, with the Thai men’s team chasing dreams of winning the title five times in a row. Three matches were contested in the Saturday’s last round-robin preliminaries, after which all participating teams in both men’s and women’s categories were ranked respectively. The top two teams in both categories will then fight it out for the eventual crown, with the teams finishing third and fourth places competing in the third-place playoff. In the women’s competition, Thailand were the only team which have already completed their first-round campaign since Friday with a clean sweep of four wins. On Saturday, Indonesia, cheered on by a large crowd of home spectators, came up with an impressive form to power past Malaysia in straight sets as expected 25-22 25-14 25-18. Fairina Nabila Amalia topscored with 15 points including 11 devastating spikes for Indonesia, but Yolia Yulliana did better in the spiking skill with 12 points. Goh Ser Mui led Malaysia with seven points, assisted by Nuraini Bnti Ariffin and Lee Mei Yan, who scored the similar five points through their powerful attacks. Goh spiked four points for the team. In the other match, the Philippines proved too strong for Singapore to mercilessly crush the underdogs rivals in a one-sided battle 25-12 25-9 25-11. Valdez Alyssa bagged 11 points including nine attack hits for the Philippines, with Wu Min Ryshire leading Singapore with six points, all from deadly spikes. Meanwhile, the men’s event saw Malaysia struggle to beat Singapore in dramatic four sets 25-18 25-22 21-25 25-20. Sim Jian Qin scored a match-high 21 points including 19 kills for Malaysia. Oo Boon Chuan Vincent led Singapore with 11 points. At the completion of the single round-robin preliminaries on Saturday. Thailand top the women’s charge with 12 points from straight four wins, followed by Indonesia with nine points from three wins against one loss. The Philippines came in third place with six points from two wins against two losses and Malaysia in fourth position with three points from one win against three losses. Winless Singapore were empty-handed to finish fifth place overall and become the first time to return home. Hosts Indonesia led the mens standing with nine points from successive three wins, while Thailand, defending and consecutive four-time champions, came in second place with six points from two wins against one loss. Malaysia finished third place overall after collecting three points from one win against two losses and lacklustrous Singapore lost all three matches to come in fourth place overall with no point. On Sunday, the final day of the six-day competition, Thailand and Indonesia set up a final showdown in the men’s event. The same pairing will also battle it out for the women’s crown.
