Hot movie takes: Was Son of God entertaining? From a purely movie watching standpoint, yes. Ive always said when taken purely as a story and not having human interjection added via religion, the story of Christ is still the greatest story ever told. Shakespeare doesnt have the staying power of Christs life. So in that respect, I was fascinated with what I saw onscreen. However, the lack of African/Sub Saharan disciples and/or apostles even though Thomas was a European male COMBINED with two Romans essentially beating Christ as he walked to his crucifixion really upset me. It hit home the Eurocentric distinction that the Christian religion still has in the world, not just America. Blacks were seen as slaves and the men who beat Jesus before his death, but were not following him during his life, save for an old black man briefly being inferred to as one of the wise men at his birth. Either show us evenly or not at all.
