***Hot tips to stop summer burglars*** GMP are asking residents to make sure their homes are still secure while enjoying the heatwave. Please make sure you lock your doors and windows during the heatwave. With the scorching temperatures expected to last for at least a week, please make sure your homes are secure while you are out enjoying the weather. About a quarter of break ins during the summer are through windows and doors being left open. Over the weekend there were 10 burglaries in Bolton, with 6 being because windows or doors had been left open. Thieves got in through front doors on four occasions, and ground floor windows twice. These had either been left unlocked, or left ajar. The type of property targeted included small, easily transportable items including a handbag, cash, door keys, digital camera, jewellery, and a TV. Two burglaries, one in Westhoughton and one in Bromley Cross, involved burglars getting into homes through unlocked front doors, stealing vehicle keys and driving off in their victim’s car. All the incidents happened overnight. “Ensure that windows and doors are closed and locked when you are out. Don’t leave small windows open believing them to be safe. If you want to leave windows open while you sleep, fit window restrictors so they cannot be fully opened, or make sure they are not large enough to allow access to a burglar." “When out in your garden, ensure that windows and doors to the front of the house are secure. It only takes a second for someone to get into your home and take things without you noticing.” “If you are going on holiday make your house looks occupied by asking a neighbour to open and close the curtains or ask them to park on your drive so the house looks occupied.” GMP would also like to advise people not to advertise on social networking sites such as Facebook and Twitter that they are going on holiday. You should also make sure that sheds are secure, as burglars could use something in the shed to break into the house.
