House of Rising Sun..300+ years old: Is this the original? John Nepovietz No, this version is actually kind of a youngster. The song originated in England as a folk ballad and there are broadside versions of it from early to mid 1700s. It took a boat to Appalachia before the Revolutionary war and then headed west to New Orleans. It was originally just Rising Sun and the composer is lost to history. Reply · larry cox The Animals version in the 60s was supposedly about a guy dying of Syph he got in a House in Storeyville. Dont know what Libby was trying to convey in her womans version. John Nepovietz Larry Cox, Actually, the original song is from a womans point of view - its about a person born to higher class who slowly sinks into a life of degradation and finally death. It actually has about 10 verses, you can hunt thorough the The Archive of Folk Culture https://youtube/watch?v=C4ZGrlO7JU4
