House on stilt of Thai people: The Thai people live in the North-west of Vietnam. House is also a typical culture of Thai group. The Black Thai stilt house can be recognized by the distinctive roof shaped like a turtle shell. Recounting the myth of a furtle that taught people how to build houses, the Thai consider the turtle as their benefactor. Along with the turtle shell roof, they have the custom os worshipping a turtle shell hung at the top of the sacred column inside the house. The Khau Cut on the gables of Thai houses in the Northwest of Vietnam consists of two pieces of bamboo or wood tied crosswise. They are not merely decoration but also serve to prevent the roof from damage by the wind and signal the social status of the home owner. Khau Cut is variety in form and motif. Nobles make Khau Cut in the form of lotus (Cut lai bua). Average people make geometric Khau Cut (Cut chim). Newly-wed couples make Khau Cut in buns or in the form of pregnant women, expressing their hope for happiness (Cut hang mi). Poor people make simple and plain Khau Cut (cut mai). People usually paint a layer of white lime on the Khau Cut. Nowadays, many new styles of Khau cut have been created, such as planes or jets. But elaborate Khau Cut has become rare.
