How Dare He! Any one of us, if put in this womans shoes, called a dog by our Savior, could easily have become indignant and blown our cork. How dare someone call us that name! But the implication that the woman is a dog has virtually the opposite effect on her. Instead of growing angry, she presses hard, refusing to give up. She does so in faith. She is confident that her Lord loves her, that He has something good to give her, that He wont send her away empty. Yes, Lord, but... She speaks out of repentance, willingly acknowledging that she is a sinner pleading for forgiveness from her Lord. Even the dogs under the table eat the childrens crumbs, she reminds Him. She believes in faith that the Lord will give her something, even if it is small. The something will be better than nothing. He answers her: For this statement you may go your way. In these words, she and we are forgiven, certain in the knowledge that Christ works actively on our behalf. We leave as puppies with wagging tails, eager and joyful to be little dogs at the table of the One who truly can and does do all things well. Lord God, let this womans faith teach us to cling to Your promises and trust in Your mercies. Amen!
