How Rick Stein finally got it right – and Mollymook in Winter About a decade ago I ate at Bannisters – otherwise known as Rick Stein at Bannisters or “that place down the coast that Rick Stein owns” – and I was critical of the food. There is always a challenge if you choose to sell food beside the seaside. Can you sell anything other than light, bright and breezy, sunshine-y food? This was the problem for poor Andre at Avoca who wanted to provide classic, heavy French cuisine with a million dollar view over Avoca Beach. He eventually went back to France. In the case of Rick Stein – well, in the beginning, he was making Andre’s mistake and serving a very heavy, European cuisine even though his produce was Australian and from the sea. I returned last summer and was amazed. Stein has adapted and the result is genuinely excellent seafood for the Australian climate and modified by the Mod Oz and Asian influences that make Australian fine dining so distinctive. If you want an amazing day out ... and the chance to walk along one of the most sublime beaches in New South Wales ... then Bannisters and a walk along Mollymook is about as close to heaven as anyone can reasonably expect. Even on a winter’s day. Mind you it looks like winter is over already! aussietowns.au/town/mollymook-nsw
