How beautiful our harbour is today sparkling in the sun, blue blue sky..... It is a pity it has had another kick in the guts from Auckland Council and Watercare.... this from Manukau Harbour Restoration Society ..... In preparing our appeal of consents for the Central Interceptor project, we have learned that the current resource consent allowing Watercare to discharge treated effluent into the harbour recommends Auckland Council conduct a comprehensive assessment of the effects of this discharge on the Manukau Harbour. This review is to happen every 5 years, with the first scheduled to begin October 2014. At the July meeting of the Infrastructure Committee, MHRS requested Cllr Mike Lee, Chair, initiate this review but he refused. We believe this review must take place prior to granting final approval of the CI project. If we don’t understand the current condition on the harbour how can we be sure the CI won’t damage it further? Different technology or standards may be necessary to ensure harbour water quality continues to improve, one of the goals in the consent which must be met. Please contact your Councillors and Local Board members and urge them to initiate this review. To read the Consent (REVIEW of DISCHARGE – FULL CONSENT JULY 2014) and the materials MHRS presented to the Infrastructure Committee (MHRS/TOES Presentation to Infrastructure Committee - JULY 2014) Please go here: mhrs.org.nz//Submission.aspx To see what the discharge looks like when it is being released to the harbour every day, check out the video footage MHRS shot when we took Stephen Town CEO of Auckland Council and Councillor Denise Krum on a helicopter tour of the inner harbour recently https://youtube/watch?v=2iQvRx0iflA&feature=youtu.be We continue to work with Watercare on the proposed Central Interceptor project through a Court assisted mediation process. Our goal is for significant commitments to be made to safeguard the ecology, the birds and general health of the harbour so many more generations can enjoy this recreational and environmental gem. THEY HAVE REFUSED TO ASSESS THE EFFECTS OF THE DISCHARGE ON THE HARBOUR!!! When they were recommended by Council to do so every 5 years! What is going on with the Council and Watercare - PLEASE use your keyboard or write and let them know that we MUST have this Assessment, the Council and Watercare must be held accountable for what is happening to our Harbour... :-( or you can write directly on Len Browns facebook page and let him know what you think.
