How could this happen? Scientists are people too. While they may have great knowledge in their chosen field, they are humans with weaknesses, biases, faults. All men are sinners. The Bible says the heart of man is deceiptful and wicked. As men mover further from God, they move further from honesty, integrity, truthfulness, and other Godly virtues. The fruits of the Spirit can be found in Galatians 5:22 & 23.
