How do you depict (showing not telling) that a character is an expert? I do that very well. The only problem with that is experts are nutty professor types. Think Columbo, McGeiver, Fonsies Garage. Insanely passionate. It takes extensive research and you have to almost become an expert yourself to depict it and truly convey that expertise. What is the jargon? What are the tools of the trade, habits, and occupational hazards? I like to include all the tell-tale signs that will allow me (the writer) to reach such a level of verisimilartude that an industry insider would read and say, I know this guy!
