How exciting to see Blackfish play on CNN tonight - 3 times - and the interviews, discussions, polls, tweets, posts and conversations now happening across the globe. Its heartening to see so many talented, inspired people who are helping to get this conversation started, to expose the dark side of keeping large, intelligent, social whales captive for entertainment and profit. Notably missing in this conversation is Sea World. They may be trying to do a little damage control, sending out statements and rebuttals, but they arent engaging in any of the discussions, declined all invitations to be interviewed and included in the documentary, or to be on CNN to engage in this important conversation. I hope SeaWorld realizes the paradigm has shifted - finally - and it is time to evolve and move on. A powerful corporation with a PR machine and budget like SeaWorld could do a lot of good in the world, if they listen to the people, realize times have changed, and take heed of the # 1 lesson we have learned from the marine park industry over the last 50 years: the whales are too large, long-ranging, intelligent, and social to be held in marine parks, for any reason. Whales can be seen from shorelines, ferries, and boat tours, as well as on big IMAX screens, streaming live video or audio, or through whale reports such as OrcaNetwork.org puts out. Its time for SeaWorld, the Miami Seaquarium, and others to join the conversation. The world has evolved beyond keeping orcas in tanks ~ this is not just a challenge, but an opportunity, to do the right thing. The time has come, the orcas have suffered long enough. Susan Berta
