A possible scenario is where company buyers may negotiate such low prices that their suppliers in turn are forced to push down on the price it pays its suppliers for the materials it needs. This can then have a knock-on effect on those involved in the production of raw materials, increasing the likelihood of the use of forced or slaved labour. The doable alternative is that companies insist that the Universal Declaration of Human Rights is respected across its whole supply chain to ensure that it is not inadvertently supporting slavery. (some do) The problem is extreme poverty can lead workers into exploitation situations in which they find themselves enslaved. Made worse by the government not properly enforcing labour laws and inspecting workplaces for exploitation of individuals.
