How many TRULY pay attention to severe thunderstorm warnings? Honestly? There are far more severe thunderstorm warnings issued than tornado warnings in a given year. A higher frequency also means a higher false alarm ratio. It is no secret that many severe thunderstorm warnings produce no severe weather reports within the warning. They are issued based on Doppler Radar detecting severe winds and/or severe hail or spotter reports of the same.
