How many of my friends have ever heard the word Apostille? I learned it on Saturday in a Russian notary-and-translation office. I still havent quite figured out whether its a count noun or mass noun, a concrete noun or a process noun or a result noun, so Im not quite sure how to use it in a sentence. But supposing its a concrete count noun, Im going to get one for our marriage certificate, in Springfield, MA (the western office of the Secretary of the Commonwealth of Massachusetts) in the week Im back in Amherst to bring back to Russia. That will turn our marriage certificate into an internationally recognized document, and only with the Apostille can we get a Russian-notarized translation of it. And only with a Russian-notarized translation of it does Volodja have the right as a Russian resident to transfer money from his Russian bank account to my American bank account without limit on the amount. That document proves that we are sufficiently closely related. :-)
