How many people have their cats vaccinated for Rabies? When I worked as a vet tech I used to hear the same old explanation My cat never goes outside so there is no chance he/she could get rabies. Sounds logical, right? One case that totally changed my mind and gave me a quick response to the explanation above is this...A client of the vet clinic had 4 cats. She awoke one morning to find that her indoor only cat(s) had killed a bat that had gotten into her house...bats can fit through tiny spaces. Her cats were not even close to being up to date on their rabies vaccines. I had to pack the bat on ice and send to our state lab....for 3 days this poor owner was in panic mode until we got the results back and the bat was not a rabies carrier. Even though this turned out ok, I think it is a good lesson on how easy rabies can have an effect on our indoor only kitties....there is no treatment or cure for a rabid animal, just prevention.
