One particularly useful facet of this new technology is the wealth of inexpensive online data storage and file backup solutions available, though some users may have a few concerns over the security of their private files. As with most complex topics, the answer is “it depends”. A variety of factors can decrease or increase the risk of your files being stolen by a cyber-thief. Some of these considerations stem from which secure cloud storage software you decide to use, while other concerns can be lessened considerably through careful planning on your part. Discussing file “safety” in the cloud computing context is somewhat misleading, however, as simply making the decision to store your files online protects them from a myriad of more mundane threats to your critical files, including hardware theft and local computer failure. Choosing whether to store your files locally or online will depend on a variety of factors such as the nature of the stored data, the frequency with which you will likely need to access it, and how concerned you are about ensuring the security and privacy of your records. Choosing the right storage option for you A variety of data protection solutions are available for individuals and businesses, ranging from local software and hardware backups to secure cloud storage software. Choosing the right solution for you will depend on the nature of your files and your personal needs. Local software and hardware backups are fairly inexpensive and generally easy to use, and can prevent data loss due to computer failure or theft. However, these solutions are as susceptible to the same hardware failures, viruses, physical damage and/or theft as your primary workstation. Furthermore, they generally cannot be accessed remotely, meaning you must remember to carry your backup hardware with you when you travel. Online storage solutions, however, are incredibly convenient, allowing for automatic archiving of important designated files and mobile access from any location with an Internet connection – with the trade-off that their remote location makes them vulnerable to cyber-theft. Bolstering your file security For most of us, the convenience of online cloud storage is too enticing to pass up, though the potential for those files to be digitally stolen may still concern some users. There are a few steps you can take to further guarantee your data’s continued privacy. Firstly, do some research on constructing an effective password. “Brute-force method” cyber thieves exploit the simplicity of many common passwords to gain easy access to your online accounts. Ensure that each of your passwords maintains a good balance of complexity and memorability to ensure only you can access your files, and vary your passwords between different online programmes. If file privacy is your paramount concern, consider adding an additional layer of security with a local encryption programme, which will scramble your files prior to upload and prevent anyone from accessing them even if they are stolen.
