How smart are Border Terriers you ask? Because we have many dogs on our farm we have a double gate system. In order to get into our farm you have to plug a number into a keypad, enter gate 1, wait halfway up the drive until that gate closes, then drive up to gate 2 which will open automatically. This reduces the risk of dogs running out the gate and into the road when someone comes home or visits. Weve occasionally had a dog go under the gate, and patched things, placed wood boards to keep them from digging etc. Until Tesla arrived. We thought now that he had reached full size his Houdini ways were behind him. Now that he can no longer go under the fence however, it took him a while to think of a new way. He climbs up the fence (a talent he has had for a while) until he gets to a section with big enough holes to stick his head through (the wire fence has graduated squares), then he puts his head through turns to the side and climbs sideways until his body pulls through, he is about two feet off the ground at this point. Once his hind legs pull through he drops to the ground inside the dog lock to greet whoever is driving up the driveway. He has also figured out how to open the dog food chest (with latch), and if the egg collecting basket is left on the ground for a few minutes will help himself to a delicious treat! I have owned dogs this smart before, but not one this smart AND ambitious!!!
