How times have changed: On May 8, 1984, the Quebec National Assembly was attacked by a crazy man—just as Parliament Hill was this week—Denis Lortie, a schizophrenic Canadian Forces soldier suffering from paranoid delusions. However, instead of being shot and killed by security, the heavily armed man, who had killed 3 people and wounded 13 more, was convinced by the Sergeant-at-Arms for the Assembly, René Marc Jalbert, into allowing several employees to leave; and then Jalbert invited Lortie into his downstairs office, thus setting himself up as hostage while removing the threat from the Assembly. At extreme personal risk, Mr. Jalbert spent 4 hours persuading Lortie to surrender to police, almost certainly preventing a higher death toll.
