How we Indians Selectively pan,troll and target people says a lot about our collective patriarchal and Misogynist psyche: 1) Recently Bollywood actors Alia Bhatt and Varun Dhawan were asked on a TV show to name the current president of India,Alia answered Prithviraj Chauhan and Varun Manmohan Singh. However it was Alia who was made a soft target by people trolling her on social media conveniently sparing Varun being the Guy that he is.. 2) Ram Gopal Verma was severely criticized for his insensitive tour of the Trident Hotel and Taj Mahal immediately after 26/11 as he was planning to make a film on the subject.We still watch his movies. 3) Mahesh Bhatt was in the news for calling the BJP communal and supporting the sickular Congress party.We still watch his movies. 4) Amir Khan had voiced his support for controversial Medha Patkars Narmada Bachao Andolan.HOWEVER,we all continue to love to watch and enjoy his movies!.. But,if a famous Russian woman Tennis player fails to recognize an Indian cricket legend insecure Indian fans question her character and her sporting potential and hurl the filthiest of abuses on her social media page! Most Indian men born in a very patriarchal setting find it hard to digest the fact that a super successful woman does not know a thing about their idol. It is unfortunate that for a nation that prides itself on being inclusive and accommodating, that we make such a big deal about petty issues. The bitter truth is that besides a handful of Commonwealth nations, the world does not follow or even care about the sport we excel at – Cricket. The sooner we deal with it the better.
