How will I be remembered? Especially, how will my children - TopicsExpress

How will I be remembered? Especially, how will my children remember me? How will I be remembered when they have grown to the bitter-sweet age of being able to take care of themselves? What stories about me will my grandchildren get to hear from my children? Will they remember me as the parent who always said, “Just a minute, beta,” and continued to talk in the mobile or will they remember me as one who always found time to talk and laugh with them? Will they remember the jolly good fellow who climbed and slipped and again climbed the rocky mountain during one of the family holidays, or will they remember me as a full-time morose task master pushing them to complete the homework every day? Will I be remembered as the super parent who did everything possible to retain the smiles and laughter at home, irrespective of what happened outside the home, or will I be remembered as the one who lived at home with the script carried forward from office? Will they remember me as a dictator who never allowed them to think and act on their own will, or will they remember me as a moderator who allowed them to take decisions and waited with enough bandage, ready to hold them, in case of a fall? Will I be remembered as the parent who strived to be part of their times and their interest, always extended herself as a human being in the neighbourhood, or as someone who is complacent and insensitive to others? Will I be remembered as an example to follow or as a warning? Will they remember me as strong and steady or weak and sporadic? Will I be remembered fondly with a smile or with downcast eyes and shame? Will they remember me as a comforting safe place where they can speak their minds out without any hesitation? Will they remember me as a friend, a friend they would like to have? Trust me, asking these questions to ourselves will surely bring about a big time change in the way we live our days as parents. This is like the popular management philosophy, ‘Begin with the end in mind’
