Hughson High garden grows like a fast friendship By Frank George Agriculture student Zach Rose tore a leaf off a succulent in the old greenhouse at Hughson High. Then he showed how he could lay the leaf sideways on the soil to grow a new plant. Zach’s revelation symbolizes the quickly cultivating effort at the HHS school garden. Invigorated by parents, faculty and students alike, the project boasts a state-of-the-art greenhouse, a systemized tool shed, an electronic composter and soon an amphitheater. Ag students plant pumpkins each summer and schedule presentations each fall. No one liked the lack of seating, however. So the amphitheater, a Landscaping class project, will soon seat dozens with adequate flooring. Lots of dedicated scholars stay after school to continue working the soil, according to Hailey Alcorn, also a senior in the ag department. Once a month, the garden club remains two to three hours after the final bell, this after Plant Science and Landscaping students have toiled much of the day. Zach raises poultry and Hailey works with swine. But both are well-versed in just about every aspect of the agricultural department.
