Human Connection: I know none of the individuals in the photographs below. They all moved through my life in a matter of seconds. An initial glance, your eyes meet, you exchange a momentary smile, and you drift away … sailing past each other, different destinations, different destinies. But I always appreciate that single second, that moment of “connection.” That acknowledgment of “humanness.” Sometimes I will be sitting by the pool reading and I will be distracted by a member or guest acting inappropriately, loud, obnoxious and rude. I will glance around and catch the eye of a stranger who is also appalled at what we are witnessing. We will shake our heads, laugh and go back to reading. A single moment of human connection. Holding a door for someone you don’t know and that glance of gratitude; stopping your car to allow a person to cross the street and the look of thanks; watching a ballgame in a stadium of 30,000 and smiling at the fan two rows down when a homerun sails out of the park. That contact, that union, that link. I shall never see the little Irish Step Dancer with her braided hair and her shy smile again. We are propelling through life in different directions. But I will always have that singular moment, where she marched passed me, I looked in her direction, she looked in mine, our eyes met, we smiled and I snapped her picture … so that I can always remember …
