Humbled to see and hear some members of Kardeş Türküler & KeKeCa Body Percussion send me the beautiful gift of a song they learned from my last talk/workshop at Bosphorus University, Istanbul last month. The song (Salla Fina) is in 17/8 rhythm, and is believed to be Persian in its origin. The rhythm is called Khosh Rang which is Persian for Beautiful Colour, and is the English name I have coined for this song. The genre is called Muwashshah [strophic poetry] which was born in al-Andalus in Muslim Spain (750 - 1492). The composer is Sayyid Darwish (Egypt) and the lyricist is Amin al-Jundi (Syria). The Turkish group here sings over a recording of an excellent rendition by the Beirut Ensemble for Arabic Music. And so, this song whose music is by an Egyptian, lyrics by a Syrian, rhythmic pattern Persian, recorded over a rendition that is Lebanese, in a style that is Andalucian, has travelled to Turkey through a crazy Palestinian! That is what music is all about.
