Humour helps with happiness Yesterday I received a random email. I found the email extremely humorous, I didn’t stop smiling every time I remembered the email. I thought I would share it with you all. Please do not make deriding remarks but have a good laugh at the funny side of this email. Email: “Salaam brother Ajmal Hope you are well. I m sorry I need to ask you something of personal nature. I could not help noticing you received hair treatment, which by the way looks great. I too suffer from hair loss and thinking of getting a system and just wanted to ask if you could tell me who takes care of your hair needs and costs involved. I m really sorry for asking this personal question, I know its little inappropriate, and I m sorry again. Wassalaam” My response: “Salam Thank you for emailing me. I use water and shampoo to wash my hair and a brush to keep it tidy. Nobody takes cares of my hair Alhamdulillah (praise be to God). Its grown a bit too long but I m sure when I get a chance I will cut it off. I m sorry to hear about your hair loss, may Allah make it easy for you. I have no idea what to suggest for your condition apart from speaking to your GP. Best wishes Ajmal Masroor” Reply: “Many thanks for the quick reply, forgive me I stupidly thought perhaps you underwent implant i.e. toupee / hairpiece. Apologies again Kind regards” I could have taken offense to this email, I could have been angry with the person who emailed me, I could have fired up a really strong response accusing the person of all sorts of things but I didn’t do any of that because I found the email extremely honest and humourous. I didnt stop smiling for the entire day and intact I am smiling now as I am writing this piece. I felt rather honoured to have been approached in this way. Obviously the person who is suffering from hair loss must be at great distress and desperately looking for a solution. But he has the honesty and courage to ask me for advise and also in a funny way express his admiration. I feel happy. I wish I could help but I have never researched that topic and I have no idea what steps could be taken to remedy that particular problem. However, I have full sympathy for the person and as a Muslim I could supplicate to God for assistance in providing peace and ease in the distressed person’s heart. I believe humour in life is essential for us to cope with the good, bad and ugly moments. Humour requires a great deal of honesty and readiness to self deprecate decently and moderately. Humour brings in a lot of fun in things that we do. Humour works to sooth pain and ease discomfort. Humour produces good feel factor and reduces stress and anxiety level. Remember what the blessed Prophet said, “smile, it’s a charity!” He was encouraging his followers to adopt a happy mode in their demeanour and existence. When we smile at someone, it lifts away the cloud of gloominess from their mind and they automatically smile back. We help people find happiness when we smile at them. We share our happy moments through smiling and humour and that is a brilliant form of generosity. Smile and laughter are two of greatest responses to expressions of happiness. Why deprive yourself or others of it? I have been extremely fortunate with the Grace of God that I have had opportunities to do things freely, experience life extensively and express my thoughts widely. I am grateful to God for all the blessings that He has bestowed upon me. He has given me a wonderful and funny wife, two amazing and laughing children, loving parents, supportive siblings who giggle a lot and good sets of friends. I am also grateful to God for the opportunities he has given me to experience life through fun including my current project, the world’s first online Muslim TV platform.
